The Serengeti is Tanzania’s largest park covering an area of 14,700 sq kms. Serengeti’s main attractions lies in its 3 million game animals and the annual migration when hundreds of thousands of Wildebeests and zebra trek north annually simply to graze and at times rushing across rivers and the Serengeti plains. The game mostly seen in the Serengeti in addition to the Wildebeest and Zebra are Gazelle, Lion, Cheetah, Warthog, Hyena, Hippo, and Ostrich. There are more than thirty five species of animals and many birdlife to be seen. The landscape changes with the treeless central plains to thick scrub and forest in the north. The link of the Savannah dotted with Acacia trees and outcrops of kopjes rocks.
Ngorongoro Crater and Olduval Gorge
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most beautiful nature reserves. It is one of the largest intact craters in the world (there are five damaged larger ones). The rim is about 20kms in diameter and the floor of the crater covers 250 sq kms. Over 30,000 animals including Elephant, lion, gazelle, wildebeest, zebra, cheetah, rhino, and countless number of birds live here.
Within the Ngorongoro conservation area is the historic site of Olduval Gorge. Under guidance the site yielded the remains of prehistoric elephants, giant horned sheep and enormous ostriches. The most important find is the skull of the ‘Nutcracker man’ which dates from around 1.75 million years ago.
Masai Tribesman
The Masai are probably the most famous of the African tribes. They are pastoral people noted for drinking cattle blood mixed with milk, a mainstay of their diet. Their love of cattle is legendary and based on religious beliefs. They are proud people, who are tall and slender dress in bright red cloth with both men and women decorated with beadwork and metal jewellery.
