Queenstown – Clyde – Middlemarch – Dunedin (fully guided)

The Otago Rail Trail is one of those must do relaxed  social cycling trips. While the ‘Otago Rail Trail’ can be cycled either direction, we prefer to start in Clyde. We start cycling the rail trail in Clyde and end in Middlemarch taking a leisurely 4 days which gives time to stop at the many information points along the way to absorb the history.

The Otago rail trail is a 152k gravel track that can be  cycled or walked  which makes it very easy for for all ages as the gradient is never more than 2 %. This old railway line serviced the goldrush days  and was once the longest branch line in NZ.
Central Otago rail trail is steeped in history and began in 1871, when the provincial council decided there was a need for a railway to carry fruit, wool, livestock grain, and farm supplies. The building of the railway line started some 8 years later and most of the construction was done with manual labour, which took 42 years to complete from Wingatu  to Cromwell.

This journey has many information points along the way which will give a great insight into the history of the area enjoying the beautiful historic stone buildings, bridges, and museums that offer a slide show of the years gone by. We get the opportunity at having a go at Curling in Naseby. You can also relax for coffee at cafes or try a refreshing beer at one of the local historic pubs. In the evening after your day on the saddle, showers and dinner  await in comfortable accommodation. What better way to have a holiday with some exercise, share social time with old friends or the opportunity to make other new found friends.
