Eagle festival & Gobi Desert trek - 28 days

We trek in the Altai Tavan Bogd and the Tsambagarav National Parks with a amazing week in the Gobi Desert.This trip gives mountains, Glaciers (all non technical) at a reasonable low altitude of 2,825 metres – 3,500 metres and camp by pristine lakes. The Gobi Desert offers Ice filled Canyons at Yolyn Am, Flaming cliffs of Bayanzag (Dinosaur Cemetery) and the remote sand dunes of Moltzog.

 We will mix with the local people and  be invited in to their gers for a glimpse of local life and offered various ‘delicacies’ to try. You can milk yaks  and view snow leopards (if we are lucky) Elk, bears and Ibex.

This trip has been timed for the Sagsai Eagle festival near Uligii. This is a festival where Kazakh eagle-hunters arrive at the festival on horseback, with their trained hunting eagles to compete with fellow Kazakhs with eagles hunting for objects that are being dragged by horses.

There will be various sporting contests at the festival, such as ‘bouzkhasi’ (similar to polo, but played with a carcass of a dead goat), horse races and events like picking up objects from the ground while riding on horseback.
The Mongolian Kazakhs only hunt with the larger female eagles, and eventually the eagles become a highly efficient at hunting with acute eyesight and powerful talons, which they use to hunt rabbits, hares and foxes.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Ulaanbaatar -Meet and greet dinner
Day 2: Fly Ulaanbaatar – Uligii and drive Tsambagarav National Park
Day 3 – 6: Trekking in Tsambagarav National Park
Day 7: Drive south to Altai Bogd National Park
Day 8 – 10: Trekking in Altai Tavan Bogd National Park
Day 11-13:  Trekking from Base Camp to Remote Base Camp and Chinese border 
Day 14: Trek back to Shar Gol
Day 15: Drive Shar Gol – Ulgii
Day 16 – 17: Uligii – and the annual Eagle festival & fly back to Ulaanbaatar
Day 18: Ulaanbaatar – Rest day
Day 19 – 26: Fly Ulaanbaatar south to Dalanzadgad – Gobi desert for 6-7 days trekking
Day 27:Fly Dalanzadgad to Ulaanbaatar
Day 28: Ulaanbaatar
